Where to go

Libya has much to offer the traveller. However, given the distances between the main points of interest, you will probably have to be selective. The country has three regions with points of inetest: Tripolitania, with the main city, Tripoli, Roman sites and the Jabal Nafus, the Fezzan, with its spectacular landscapes, two main areas of rock art and lakes of the Ubari Sand Sea, and finally Cyrenaica, again with a number of fascinating classical sites. A visit to the war cemeteries of Tobruk in the fas east of the country could be tacked on to a visit to Cyrenaica.

If you have a week or ten days

Five packed days would be ample to get a feel for Tripoli and cover the two main Roman sites of Leptis Magna and Sabratha, both easy day trips from Tripoli. A very intensive ten-day trip would enable you to do these coastal sites, and get down south to the Akakus Mountains, visiting, visiting the berber sites in southern Tripolitania en rout.
In Tripolitania, start by visiting Tripoli, with its old madina and Italian-planned new town, and two fine Roman sites, Sabratha, halfway between Tripoli and the Tunisian fronier, and Leptis Magna, near Khums about 90 munites´ drive east of Tripoli. Along with Oea, ancestor of modern Tripoli, these were the three cities (tri-polis) of the region in ancient times. Those with an interest in Berber culture should go up into the Jabal Nafusa, south to Tripoli. Here there are once-isolated citadel villages and the fortified granaries at Nalut. Beyond the Jabal Nafusa, hard by the Tunisiean frontier, is the tiny oasis settlement of Ghadames, the so-called `Pearl of the Sahara´. From Ghadames, the Akakus is a long drive trip south across the desert.

If you have two weeks

In a two-week trip, you could take in two of the country´s three regions, say either Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, or Tripolitania and the vast desert region of the Fezzan, the southwestern quarter of Libya. Until recently, oasis farming and herding livestock to seasonal pasture was the way of life here. To avoid a long drive south, try to get a flight to Sabha and then drive down the Wadi al Hayat to Germa, which makes an ideal base for excursions to the Dawada Lakes in the Ubari Sand Sea and the prehistoric rock carvings of the Wadi Matkhandush, in the Messak Settafet. Further to the southwest, either Serdeles (Awinat) or Ghat are the bases for excursions into the spectacular Jabal Akakus. Desert camping is a fine exerience and almost inevitable if you want to see the finest examples of prehistoric rock art around the Wadi Teshuinat in the Akakus. There is a small airport at Ghat, and when regular flights are resumed, this region wil be much more easily accessible to visitors.

If you have three weeks

On a well planned three-week trip, the visitor can cover both Tripolitania and the highlights of Fezzan, as well as taking in the main classical sites of Cyrenaica. Idealy, one would fly from Tripoli to Benghazi to avoid a 12 hours bus journey. In Cyranaica, Al Bayida or Apollonia are the most central and convenient places to use as a base, not least because there are one of the few places with decent hotels. Day excursions can be made west and east from Al Bayida or Apollonia, taking in Teucheira, Ptllemais and Qasr Libia (to the west), and and Ra´s Hilal and Derna (east). Derna has some small hotels, and might be worth an overnight stop if making the long haul east to Tobruk, a destination for those seeking to visit the graves of relatives who gave their lives in the Second World War.

Longer expeditions

For many Europeans, longer desert expeditons have become to be the big draw in Libya. Petrol is cheap, and there are thousands of square kilometers of desert landscape to roar across in four wheel drive vehicles or off-road motorcycles. Major attractions include the Dawada Lakes in the Ubari Sand Sea and the crossing from the notheast Jabal Akakus to the southern side of the Messak Settafet. For those with reliable vehicles, the Ghadames to Ubari crossing is one possiblility. The remote, extinct volcano Waw al Namus, in the eastern Fezzan, also draws visitors.
