The oasis appears out of nowhere, by waving palm, or by bushes that live on humidity in the air.

Sahara Desert Tour

Tripoli & Leptis Magna

Enjoy Tripoli and its old walled Medina. Explore Leptis Magna one of the most spectacular Roman sites along the Mediterranean coast.

Deep in the Sahara - Ancient Rock Art

From Sebha we begin our exploration of the Sahara, the largest desert on earth. Arriving at the small oasis town of Ghat, we wander through the atmospheric and well preserved brick medina (walled city) imagining the arrival of camel caravans from across the desert in years past.

Next we head towards the Akakus, a mountain range known for its beautiful red sand and extraordinary rock formations. Amongst these mountains are some of the finest rock paintings in North Africa dating back to 8000 BC, an era when this landscape was grassy savannah rather than sand desert of today.

Germa & Salt Lakes of Dawada

At Germa, capital of the Garamantian Empire whose warriors successfully repelled the Roman invasions, we discover an ancient trading centre that once formed the link between Equatorial Africa and the Mediterranean coast.

Later we encounter the surreal sight of the Dawada Lakes. A series of eleven lakes seemingly dropped in the middle of the desert. Finally camping in the dunes of the Ubari Sand Sea, we enjoy for the last time the tranquillity of the desert before flying back to Tripoli.

Land only Itinerary

Be Prepared: While our intention is to adhere to the day-by-day route printed below, a degree of flexibility is built into the itinerary. Overnight stops may vary from those suggested. Meals are indicated as: (B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner).

Itinerary : 8 Day & 7 Nights

Day 1: Arrival Day / Tripoli

Your city touring begins at the Jamahiriya Museum. Housed in the great citadel, this beautifully designed museum displays artifacts from the Phoenician, Greek, Roman and Islamic periods, as well as an excellent ethnographic collection on the upper floor. After lunch, our touring continues in the Medina, where we will visit some of the most interesting monuments, including the Naga Mosque, Tripoli’s oldest, and Gurgi Mosque, built in 1833 by a Georgian mamluk responsible for Tripoli’s fleet. Its unusual octagonal minaret is the tallest in the Medina.
Meals: Dinner

Day 2: Leptis Magna / Sabha

How many of you have, while traveling in Egypt or Tunisia, dreamed of the day when we would see the magnificent ancient city Leptis Magna, just across the border in Libya? Finally realizing that dream, you will spend the entire day exploring the ancient streets and lavishly decorated buildings constructed during the reign of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus. His use of the best builders and finest of materials from his Mediterranean domain preserved the exquisite workmanship and fine sculptures that adorned every building for us to enjoy centuries later. As we visit the extravagant bath complexes, markets, temples, theater, etc., we will marvel at the livability of this city and the perfection of its town planning. The day ends with a visit to the large site museum. We visit Villa Sileen before returning to Tripoli for dinner and flight to Sebha.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Day 3: Ubari Sand Sea

The Fezzan has a great variety of desert features, from rocky plateaux to incredible sand dunes, lush green oases and huge sandstone massifs. Clinging to our seats, we begin our great adventure when we leave the tarmac and enter the Ubari Sand Seas. We will spend the day amid the extraordinary dunes, some reaching 70 meters, and oasis pools of this spectacular desert sea. The next four nights will be spent the nights camping. Our first two nights will be spent in a beautiful setting surrounded by the enormous Ubari dunes. Come prepared for endless sunsets and starry nights.
Meals: Breakfast. Lunch & dinner

Day 4: Drive to Wadi Methkandoush via Germa

Expect a full day of driving to and from the Wadi Mattendush, where we will view a large area of over 4,000-year-old rock carvings. These beautifully carved representations of animals that are no longer found in North Africa include: elephants, giraffes, flocks of ostriches, hippopotami, buffalo and crocodiles, as well as hunters and dancers. The rewards of this site will make the drive worthwhile. Overnight wild camp. (B, L, D)

Day 5: Akakus

After visiting Germa, where touring includes the mud-brick ruins of the ancient city, the Archaeological Museum, a mausoleum that is thought to date back to Domitian’s reign (AD 81-96) and the pyramidal tombs known as the Royal Tombs of the Garamantes, we drive south into the Akakus. We enter a spectacularly beautiful area in the Akakus chain of mountains, driving on sandy wadi beds and through deep canyons to the Akakus Camp. (B, L, D)

Day 6: Exploring the Akakus Mountains

The Akakus region’s art consists of both carvings and paintings. In terra-cotta, red and white, these fascinating paintings give us a vivid picture of life thousands of years ago. The scenes are quite narrative, depicting celebration, battle, hunting, worship and even an intimate scene of a woman arranging her hair. We will spend the full day driving in the sandy foothills of the Akakus, stopping frequently to view areas of rock art.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner daily

Day 7: Fly back to Tripoli

Sadly though, we have to leave this idyll and head back to Sebha in time for dinner before we board our flight back to Tripoli. Overnight at your hotel in Tripoli. (included meals: B, L, D).

Day 8: Tripoli / Departure Day

Today you can go back to the old town on your own to do some shopping for souvenirs – your hotel is just five minutes away -or just wander around to get enticed by the confusing array of streets and alleyways in the medina. Another option is to visit the former British and French embassies, meticulously restored buildings from the 17th and 18th century, with their peaceful gardens a haven of tranquility in this bustling city. At noon you will be transferred to Tripoli International Airport for your international flight. (B)

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Seasonal Climate

Libya has a Mediterranean climate around the coastal strips of Tripoli and the Nafusa
Mountains, which makes them pleasant in most seasons. Winter can have cold days on the coast and in the mountains with occasional snow in the Nafusa Mountains.

Spring (Mar/Apr) is a good time to visit after the rains when trees and flowers are in blossom. Hot summers are tempered by sea breezes and sites are usually free of other visitors. Autumn is cooler. Winter can be very cold. Up-to-date information on the weather worldwide can be found at http://www.sherwstravel.com.

Visa Requirements

Visas are required by all nationalities but are now available on arrival, although the authorisation must be organised in advance. In order to obtain a visa on arrival passport information must be forwarded to Sherwes Travel with booking details.

Important Notes

Visa applications may take up to 2 weeks to process, as Sherwes Travel has to seek authorisation from the Ministry of Interior in Libya. We regret, therefore, that we cannot accept bookings less than 2 weeks before the tour departure date. Once authorisation is obtained, the Libyan authorities issue a visa on arrival. Any passport that has an endorsement or a visa for Israel, either valid or expired, will not be accepted. Nor will immigration accept the passport of anyone who has travelled to Jordan or Egypt via Israel, even without gaining a stamp from the Israel/Jordan or
Israel/Egypt border, as this implies entry via Israel.

Vaccinations & Protection

Nothing compulsory, but we recommend protection against malaria, tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis A and polio. Consult your travel clinic for latest advice on different prophylaxis available against malaria. Special Note: Visa and vaccination requirements are subject to change and should be confirmed before departure. Further information regarding vaccinations for travel to Libya can be found at www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk and from your local healthcare provider.

Electric Supply and Plugs

For comprehensive information regarding voltages and plug types in use in the countries visited, we recommend you check the website http://www.kropla.com

TIPPING

Local Staff:

Although entirely voluntary, tipping is a recognized part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. Accordingly you should allow approx. €37, £25 or $50 for gratuities for local staff.

Tour Leader:

At your discretion you might also consider tipping your tour leader in appreciation of the efficiency and service you receive.

PACKING FOR YOUR TRIP

Luggage:

One main piece of baggage and a daysac. Total allowance: 44lbs/20kgs. Please note many Libyan hotels do not have porters and you will need to carry your own luggage.

Clothing:

Pack essentially for 'All Tours' plus ‘Hot Conditions’. Summer (Apr to Sept): Clothing should be lightweight. However, a warm fleece and/or a warm sweater is strongly recommended as the desert can become very cold at night – even in the summer. Winter (Oct to Mar): Cold days and nights where the night-time temperatures fall sharply. Therefore, much thicker clothing is essential for cold days and colder nights. We strongly recommend that you take warm clothing to sleep in (eg. track suit or thermal underwear) as the quality of heating in Libyan accommodation can be variable. Waterproof jacket and trousers and a thick fleece are strongly recommended between December and January.

Footwear:

Comfortable shoes/trainers for exploring rocky and sometimes thorny sites, and sandals for relaxing in.

Equipment

Whilst camping a mattress is provided but you’ll need a 4-season
(temperature –5°C to 0°C) sleeping bag; a day bag, torch (with spare batteries), sun hat, high factor sun cream, sunglasses and a water bottle are essential.

Alteration & amendments

Because of the unpredictable nature of the desert, flexibility is required concerning itineraries indicated and sites mentioned, there for Sherwes reserves the right to change or cancel any route or special arrangement should conditions necessitate this and offer substitutes at equal value.

Transportation

Motor coach with A/C and MIC, will be used for long distance drives on paved roads, size of coach will be arranged according to the number of the group.
